CPA Ontario is actively monitoring the development and spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), keeping a very close eye on the situation in order to respond in an appropriate manner. Consistent with global efforts to mitigate the spread of this virus, CPA Ontario has made the difficult but necessary decision to postpone TPA tax clincs. Registered volunteers will receive an email with further details.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but our primary concern must be the safety and well-being of all of our members, students, employees and extended community.

We appreciate the support you have given to the TPA program and we look forward to continuing to help those in need in the coming months. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact:

CPAs can help make a difference in the lives of those in need through our Tax Preparation Assistance Program. Our flagship volunteer initiative brings together CPAs from across the province to prepare tax returns for eligible individuals with modest incomes, free of charge. Thanks to volunteers like you, tens of thousands of individuals and families gain access to the invaluable tax refunds and credits that are only available by filing an income tax return.

CPA Ontario has unified its program with the CRA's Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). When you register to volunteer, you’re encouraged to indicate that you’d like to be connected with your local CPA Ontario Association. In doing so, you’ll be connected to a coordinator from your local Association for placement in a clinic run by CPA Ontario as part of the CVITP. If those clinics do not suit your schedule, you can also volunteer with the CVITP and your coordinator will connect you to a placement that fits your availability.

Once you’ve registered for the program with the CRA and indicated that you want to be connected with CPA Ontario, you’ll receive an email within 10 days from us confirming your registration has been received.

STEP 1: Decide to volunteer.

STEP 2: Register as a volunteer with the CRA and include your local CPA Ontario Association. After registering you will also be asked to register for a volunteer EFILE. Please note: Business EFILE numbers cannot be used for this program.

STEP 3: The CRA will send confirmation of approval to volunteer via email. If you have not received confirmation after 30 days please email

STEP 4: In 10 days of registering, you will receive a welcome email from CPA Ontario with details on training opportunities.

STEP 5: Your local coordinator will be in touch to coordinate your volunteer placement at a clinic.

All volunteers, new and returning are asked to register with the CVITP online. This process takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Please note: You will be required to register for a volunteer EFILE account in order to be approved and volunteer with the TPA program. Your Business EFILE number will not be accepted.

During the registration process, all volunteers will need to supply their:

  • legal name
  • date of birth
  • preferred mailing address
  • business and/or employer name and address
  • phone number
  • email address
  • social insurance number (SIN)
  • language preference
  • foreign languages spoken
  • local CPA Ontario Association
  • volunteer EFILE number and password from the prior year to renew or register for a new one (if a returning volunteer)

A step-by-step registration guide is available to assist you in the section below, including new and returning volunteer guides.

Training details to follow at a later date.
