What is the greatest opportunity and challenge facing the accounting profession and CPA Ontario?

The technology revolution driven by AI creates both a unique challenge and a compelling opportunity.

The challenge is that AI is creating downward pressure on attracting top talent to the profession and is disrupting the service offering of CPAs. This can be further compounded with CPA education not evolving with the innovation and speed required to demonstrate that the CPA designation uniquely equips professionals to successfully lead in a world that is undergoing a fundamental transformation.

The opportunity is to evolve the CPA education program and services for our stakeholders. Notably, equipping them with the capabilities that enable and empower them to lead in this era. CPA Ontario also has an opportunity to articulate and amplify its unique value proposition. No matter where one wishes to work or serve, the CPA gives professionals credibility because it signals to stakeholders that a CPA (i) operates with integrity; (ii) demonstrates trust; (iii) knows how to reason and think critically; (iv) applies good judgment grounded in data, analysis, and experience; (v) can solve problems; (vi) communicates effectively; (vii) knows how to work creatively and collaboratively with other professionals in multi-disciplinary teams; (viii) is able to orchestrate work and lead teams in a dynamic environment that has humans, AI agents and robots working together to deliver client, colleague, and business outcomes; and (ix) demonstrates curiosity and a learning orientation that enables them to keep pace with the rapid pace of change.
