CPA Ontario welcomes proclamation of Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario Act, 2017
(Toronto, May 18, 2017) – CPA Ontario welcomes the passing of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario Act, 2017, which finalizes the unification of Ontario’s accounting profession.
“CPA Ontario would like to thank the Premier, the Attorney General, and the Finance Minister, as well as MPPs from all three parties, for their thoughtful engagement with the profession throughout the unification process,” said Carol Wilding, FCPA, FCA, President and CEO of CPA Ontario. “The passage of this Act marks the successful completion of unification of the accounting profession in the province.”
With the completion of the Act, all of Ontario’s CPAs will meet the same high standards for qualification and conduct. The move from the legacy designations to the CPA designation will both end marketplace confusion and provide Ontarians with the protection and comfort of knowing that all Ontario CPAs are regulated in this province. For people seeking to enter the accounting profession, there will continue to be multiple pathways accessible to help Canadians and the internationally educated achieve the CPA designation.
“This is a milestone for our profession, not only in Ontario but right across Canada where more than 200,000 Chartered Professional Accountants are now fully unified,” said Johanne Charbonneau, FCPA, FCGA, Chair of CPA Ontario Council. “We look forward to working with our members, students and stakeholders to build upon this new beginning for accounting in this province.”
