Candidate Statement

Why are you interested in joining Council?

My primary interest in joining the Council is around the advancement of innovation and entrepreneurship for Canada in general and the CPA profession specifically. I have spent most of my working career building and scaling companies as well as disrupting the status quo (big oligopolies) in Canada and believe strongly that the concepts of innovation, smart country and start-up nation will be three primary drivers of societal success and economic well-being for Canada and the world over the next century.

How do your experiences align with the following skills, attributes and experiences that have been prioritized for incoming members of Council? Please share two to three examples.

  • Board and Governance Experience
  • Business Acumen
  • Emerging Technology
  • Risk Management
  • Future of the Profession / Learning
  • ESG / DE&I
  • I have been a member of CPA Ontario’s Council for the past two years and serve on its Risk Committee. I have worked closely with the President and CEO on a number of initiatives focused on innovation and speed to market.
  • I have co-built (employee number one) WIND Mobile Canada, one of the largest scale-ups in Canadian history. Prior to WIND Mobile Canada, I built a number of smaller technology and telecom companies.
  • I sit on (and have sat on) numerous boards (public and private) primarily in technology and innovation.
  • I have been a very active investor in the Canadian innovation ecosystem since exiting WIND Mobile in 2016.
  • I have been an active mentor at many technology accelerators and labs in the country – Creative Destruction Lab Toronto and Halifax, Techstars Toronto, Next Canada, Founder Institue, Ryerson DMZ, etc.
  • I co-founded a not-for-profit (MindFrame Connect) which is focused on elevating the craft of mentorship and menteeship and building skills for entrepreneurial resiliency. I delivered 70 workshops to over 1500 individuals (globally). I wrote a 100,000-word manuscript on the topic, including a chapter on DE&I.
  • I speak publicly multiple times per month on the themes of my entrepreneurial journey, innovation, scaling, crisis management, mentorship, resiliency, etc.

What is the greatest opportunity and challenge facing the accounting profession and CPA Ontario?

We have a trusted and respected role as a key persona (“measurer”) in the business community in Canada. We need to build upon this to move far more quickly in evolving the profession, its competencies and certifications for the innovation economy.
