Toronto student captures CPA profession’s Canadian Gold Medal
782 Ontarians pass Canada-wide CPA exam
Toronto (December 4, 2015) – The Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario (CPA Ontario) congratulates Erin Compeau of Toronto who captured the Canadian and Ontario Gold Medals as the top writer of the Common Final Examination (CFE) in the country. The CFE, written in September, is a national three-day evaluation that assesses competencies including essential knowledge, professional judgment, ethics and the ability to communicate.
A student in the CPA education program, Erin has a Bachelor of Business Administration with Distinction from York University’s Schulich School of Business and works at Deloitte LLP in Toronto.
On why she chose a career in the accounting profession, Erin said: “I appreciate the respect that the designation affords and that there is an element of altruism in being a CPA, in that it provides a valuable public service.
“This is definitely a transitional year for the accounting profession and being the first year of students to write the new CFE exam definitely brought with it a pressure to uphold the high standards set by past writers of the former Uniform Evaluation (UFE). Before each day of the CFE, I read a transcript of Sheryl Sandberg’s TED Talk and realized that this was my opportunity to ‘lean in’.”
A total of 20 Ontario students placed on the prestigious 52-member National Honour Roll and Ontario had 782 of the country’s 2,218 successful CFE writers. CPA Ontario also celebrated more than 3,550 successful students, who were either admitted into membership or on the cusp of achieving it, during four convocation ceremonies that took place during November. This marks a milestone for these CPAs, acknowledging years of hard work, dedicated study, steadfast work-life balance and a true commitment to the accounting profession and their careers.
The CFE is an important component of the new CPA qualification program, which includes prescribed education, practical experience and examination requirements. This was the first time the new CFE was written by a cohort of students, as the new CPA program replaces the legacy Chartered Accountant (CA), Certified General Accountant (CGA) and Certified Management Accountant (CMA) programs. Only those who complete this entire CPA program successfully are entitled to use the internationally recognized designation of Chartered Professional Accountant, a profession known for financial expertise, strategic thinking, business insight and leadership.
The following 19 other Ontario CFE writers have also achieved recognition on the 2015 National Honour Roll:
- Benjamin Ahier of Toronto
- Janine Cammara of Toronto
- Nancy Dai of Calgary
- Evan Feldstein of Thornhill
- Dominic Franchi of Ottawa

“Congratulations to all the successful Ontario candidates,” said Carol Wilding, FCPA, FCA, President and CEO of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario. “Qualifying to become a CPA is a very challenging process and the resulting career is rich in rewards and opportunities. I am confident that all the students will make great contributions to the accounting profession and will uphold the high standards of the CPA designation.”
