Conference Focus Group

CPA Ontario’s Conference Focus Groups are composed of experienced CPAs whose primary mandate is to determine conference themes and recommend relevant topics and potential speakers.

Conference Focus Group Responsibilities

The Conference Focus Group meets every 1.5-2 weeks for 60-90 minutes to discuss the conference theme, recommend potential speakers and session topics. Minimum commitment is one committee term. Conference Focus Group activities will take place during the six to eight months prior to the Conference.

Focus Group activity timelines and responsibilities are as follows:

  • Initial meeting and brainstorming session to develop theme, conference objectives and topics; determine follow up strategy to identify potential speakers (2 hours – in person, if possible)
  • Second meeting to report on speaker identification. availability and interest; identify potential issues or changes in strategy (1.5 weeks later; 1 hour – in person or by conference call)
  • Final meeting to confirm speakers and address outstanding items (1.5 weeks later; 1 hour - by conference call)
  • Debrief meeting following conference (1.5 hours)
  • Before the conference, spread the word about the conference to contacts and encourage attendance (through email communication and social media posts)
  • Introduce speakers and network with attendees onsite

CPA Ontario will cover travel costs incurred for attending meetings.

CPA Ontario Responsibilities

  • Meeting Management

    • Schedule and prepare agendas for meetings
    • Circulate meeting minutes
    • Follow-up with committee members regarding any outstanding items and update committee regarding confirmed speakers
  • Overall conference management - Logistics

    • Leading up to the conference:

      • Update committee regarding registration numbers
      • Manage speaker contracts and other logistical requirements
      • All other logistics
    • Following the conference:

      • Survey and thank you correspondence
