Balance Work and School

Nearly half of Canadian youth aged 15-24 are working part time, according to Statistics Canada. That means, if you’re reading this, there’s a pretty good chance you have already landed a part-time job – or you may be in the process of trying to get one. 

Balancing both work and school can be tricky. So, we gathered some tips to help you manage these competing demands:

PLAN

Find yourself a calendar that works for you and use it. You can go retro and get yourself an old-fashioned paper agenda or use an app on your phone. It doesn’t really matter which method you choose, just choose one. Plot out your school deadlines and your work schedule. Plan ahead for last-minute study sessions and block off more study time than you think you’ll need. If you’re using a digital calendar, consider inviting your parents and your friends to see it. This will help them understand your priorities and it will help you make plans to see your friends more easily.

FIND THE RIGHT FIT

Find a part-time job that fits you and your needs. Does it make sense for you to find seasonal work during summer vacation to complement your school schedule? Is it time to level-up your babysitting game and offer your services to a wider community? For your savings goals, can you afford to not work weekends? Make sure your employer understands how many hours and which days you are willing to take on.

PRIORITIZE, PRIORITIZE, AND PRIORITIZE AGAIN 

Once you settle on what’s most important to you, learn to live with the fact that some things will inevitably fall by the wayside. Accept the FOMO and move on. There will be other parties. Focus on your goals and don’t forget about why you’re wearing that hideous uniform in the first place.

If you’re finding it difficult to manage your stress or are feeling overwhelmed, watch out for signs of burnout. Remember, it’s totally ok to shift your priorities if you need to.

Don’t forget to go outside. Take breaks. Sleep well. Drink water. Socialize. Talk to your parents or an adult you love and trust. Focus on being your happiest and healthiest self.
