Common Final Examination - Frequently Asked Questions

  • How many times can I attempt the CFE?

Students may attempt the CFE three times.

  • When can I view my CFE results?

You can view your results on the CPA Ontario website at 10 a.m. on the official date of release. Results are only posted if your results are successful and you have given consent to have your name published on the CPA Ontario website.

  • How do I receive my results if I did not provide consent for my results to be published online?

Students can log into the student portal with their candidate number and review the details of their CFE results.

  • Who can request a review?

Failing candidates or passing candidates with depth in Assurance (role) who failed depth in Financial Reporting may request an appeal.

    Review -  Day 1
Candidates may appeal their fail status. Day 1 is holistically assessed and any failing or marginal papers are looked at a minimum of two times. Some papers are looked at a third time.

    Review -  Days 2 and 3
Candidates who fail at Level 1 and are assigned an overall sufficiency grouping of 1 or 2 may want to request a review of their results (an appeal). Candidates who failed to demonstrate competence in one specific competency area in any Level 2, Level 3 or Level 4 may want to request an appeal.

  • What is a Performance Analysis Review (PAR)?

A Performance Analysis Review (PAR) provides candidates with specific feedback on the areas where the minimum standard was not met and it provides comments on how to improve performance. In addition, areas where candidates performed well are also commented on.

A PAR is available for Day 1, Days 2 and 3, or all days.

  • What if my review is successful and I have now passed the CFE?

Should your fail standing be changed to a pass standing, the detailed performance analysis will not be performed and any associated fees will be refunded. If the appeal is successful, all fees paid for the appeal will be refunded.

  • I have successfully passed the CFE. What are the next steps?

Complete your practical experience requirements. If you have completed your practical experience requirements refer to Admission to Membership.

  • Is there a place where I can view the pass rates and exam statistics?

Pass rates and exam statistics are not published.

  • I was unsuccessful at the CFE and would like my examination remarked. How can I request that?

Students must apply online through CPA Ontario’s website for a Review of Examination Results. See CFE Appeals and PARs for more information.
