The National Honour Roll recognizes candidates who demonstrated academic excellence and exceptional abilities in the Common Final Exam. CPA Ontario congratulates the future leaders of the accounting profession who made the National Honour Roll.

Michael Wong tends to glean something valuable from every experience, so choosing a single source of inspiration for his Gold Medal achievement in the Common Final Examination is challenging. His parents, friends, classmates, professors and Deloitte mentors all contributed to his latest accolade, the product of countless hours of studying and hard work. With a lifelong interest in business, Michael plans to focus on infrastructure, corporate finance, private equity, and mergers and acquisitions – a realistic goal given the versatility he attributes to CPAs. Committed to anything he puts his mind to, Michael enjoys a combination of cerebral and physical hobbies – he’s part rock climber, cook, globe-trotting hiker, and avid student of history, foreign affairs, economics and science fiction.

Currently employed at KPMG, Zack Bhatia plans to use his CPA designation to discover the nuances of corporation tax, before exploring them with students as a professor of taxation. Boasting a passion for music (and a knack for freestyle rapping) as well as business, Zack has an enviable blend of personal attributes: driven, organized and mellow. Inspired by his professors to excel on both sides of the classroom, he is relieved to have earned the Honour Roll distinction – an important early milestone on an ambitious career path.

Amninder Bindra is glad to have aced the CFE, as he can now focus on developing the business acumen to become a successful CPA entrepreneur. With his accounting career underway at Deloitte, Amninder draws inspiration from his mother and firmly believes in the importance of establishing work-life balance, regardless of the job description. An amateur motorcycle racer with an affinity for cooking, Amninder will happily spend a vacation anywhere provided the company’s good.

Hanning Cai was stunned when her KPMG colleague delivered the Honour Roll news to her over the phone, but her shock quickly gave way to elation once reality set in. Drawing inspiration from her mother, who nimbly balances the demands of work and family, she dabbled in boxing, ballet and painting before settling on accounting. Honest, reliable and creative, Hanning believes she can excel in the field of taxation thanks to the professional competencies she developed in the CPA program.

Born in Beirut, Mory Ghanem fast-tracked high school and earned her bachelor’s degree when she was just 19 years old. Since then, she has secured a job at the Canada Revenue Agency and plans to expand her tax and audit knowledge as a CPA while gaining the interpersonal skills to one day teach these subjects. Already an accomplished marathon runner and up-and-coming triathlete, Mory has hiked the tallest mountain in the U.K. – Scotland’s Ben Nevis – and indulges her adventurous side through travelling, hiking and camping.

Taking his cue from his role model Warren Buffet and those who apply themselves to succeed, Andrew believes his acquired skills will grant him the flexibility to prosper in numerous markets around the world. He is also a former downhill mountain biking fanatic and maintains a 12-year passion for the guitar.

With the Honour Roll now firmly under his belt, he plans to use the communication skills he learned in the CPA program to help taxpayers understand and overcome complicated issues. Inquisitive and jovial, Matt enjoys learning how to live a healthy life, which for him includes a lot of ping pong.

Abigail Hoekstra most looks forward to accessing a network of professionals and effecting change as a CPA. Making the Honour Roll and landing a job at Deloitte were important steps toward these goals. Inspired by her entrepreneurial mother, Abigail believes the versatile, internationally recognized CPA designation is the ideal way to make an impact. Driven and athletic, Abigail loves to travel but never visits the same place twice – though she may make an exception for Costa Rica.

Christopher Houng is glad that he persevered in the challenging CFE tax role when others doubted him. Inspired by individuals who dedicate themselves to their craft, Christopher believes that the globally recognized CPA designation denotes hard work and offers ample opportunity for professional growth.

Landing a job at Deloitte was a good start for Tina Jin, who aims to be an effective mentor to those following a similar path. Now that her dream of making the CFE Honour Roll has become reality, Tina can gain the knowledge and experience needed to make a difference. Of Korean descent but born in China, Tina enjoys dragon boating in her spare time.

Now at CIBC, Samantha wants to make a positive and meaningful impact through her work and looks to leaders at the forefront of change for inspiration.

Bill Lin’s entrepreneurial spirit dates to his childhood, when he was a bookkeeper for his mother’s small business. Ever since, he has dreamed of applying CPA savvy to the management of a start-up in the tech or entertainment industry. Today he pursues his passion as part of Deloitte’s private technology team, but his mother remains his role model. Equally inspired by fashion and music (Guo Pei, FKA Twigs and Lada Gaga are influences), Bill indulges his artistic inclinations by sewing, designing clothes, painting and playing the piano.

Daniel Mahne credits his CFE success to family, colleagues and the calming surrounds of his fiancée’s cottage in Tobermory, Ontario, where he often studied. Craving a more academic experience in high school, he transitioned from budding chef to accounting major – and never looked back. He counts poetry, travelling, scotch and video games among his many interests, but limits his accounting focus to the world of taxation. Now at Crowe Soberman, Daniel is eager to further his career using the unique networks and resources available to CPAs.

The granddaughter of a career accountant, she possesses a canny ability to remember months-old financial measures and enjoys relaxing with her husband and their two dogs at the family cottage.

A wine and coffee aficionado, Kresimir’s mother tongue is Croatian, and in 2018 he witnessed Croatia compete against France in the FIFA World Cup Final.

Amy is a talented dancer who is always on the lookout for new experiences to savour, but in her opinion few experiences beat the comforts of the beach.

Add CFE Honour Roll recipient to Nishi Shah’s other two titles – taekwondo black belt and karaoke rap god. Motivated by the pride she elicits in her family through her achievements, Nishi is also a math whiz, marathon runner, tennis player and “lake-trotter” (having set foot in all five Great Lakes), and she cites hockey player Hayley Wickenheiser as a role model. Nishi is looking forward to helping her Deloitte colleagues and future clients overcome unique business challenges.

As a CPA, Ram wants to explore the advisory and valuations space to continue building his skillset and help clients identify growth opportunities in today's business landscape. An adventurous traveller, Ram has gazed at the Swiss Alps from a glass bridge at 9,000 feet.

Her father, who taught himself English after immigrating from China, is a natural role model for applying dedication and critical thinking to any problem. A born-and-bred Torontonian (with a lot of love for Vancouver), Davis has a keen interest in real estate and volunteers his time on a condominium board.

Outside of work, Mani enjoys playing board games – especially Mahjong – and once booked a last-minute trip on a whim. Her ever-supportive sister is a continuous source of encouragement.
