CPA Common Final Examination (CFE)

The Common Final Examination (CFE) is the culmination of the CPA Professional Education Program (PEP). The CFE is a three-day examination that evaluates students on the competencies defined by the CPA Canada Competency Map, which outlines the knowledge, skills and proficiency levels you must have as a Canadian CPA.

During the three-day CFE you will be required to:

  • Demonstrate depth in Financial Reporting and/or Management Accounting and in your Elective depth role and breadth of your abilities across all six technical competencies based on the CPA Competency Map.
  • Draw on learning from your Capstone 1 case to complete Day 1 of the exam.
Review all of our guides and resources to support you through the CFE.

Plan your path towards the CFE

See when you should take your CPA PEP modules for your desired CFE date. It is recommended that you take Capstone 1 and Capstone 2 immediately before the CFE.

Note: The above are sample paths only and assumes that a student has passed each module on their first attempt and that they are taken sequentially with no breaks between sessions. Students are able to delay enrolment to another term if they wish, and many do due to busy seasonal schedules, but must keep in mind the overall PEP deadlines as noted in Regulation 9-1. The Elective modules are not recommended to be taken at the same time and so have been spread out over two terms.
